January is an exciting month in the library as we begin our annual CKES Mock Caldecott Awards!
Students in Grades 1–4 are putting on their “book critic” hats and taking a close look at up to five outstanding picture books. Instead of just reading for fun, they are learning to examine illustrations carefully and think about how artwork helps tell a story.
As part of the project, each class is exploring the books together and asking four important questions:

- Were the illustrations done well?
- Do the illustrations help the story’s theme or mood?
- Are the illustrations critical to understanding the story?
- Would kids want to read this book because of the illustrations?

| Next week, after carefully examining all five books, students will cast their votes to decide which one should win the CKES Caldecott Award. We can’t wait to see which book our young readers choose as their favourite! We will then compare our winner to the actual Caldecott winner! |  |
