Numerous studies have linked student achievement with effective school library programs. At CKES, our library learning commons is an integral component of our instructional program. An inquiry process that emphasizes reading and research, along with information technology processes, deepens and enriches student learning.
Students are encouraged to:
- connect to background information and assess what you know
- ask questions
- hypothesize and investigate
- use a variety of information sources
- evaluate the quality of information
- strategic reading and thinking
- think critically
- highlight and take notes
- categorize and organize information
- transform and construct new understandings
- cite sources
- communicate their understanding
- evaluate and reflect on their product and learning process
To facilitate this process, classroom teachers and the teacher-librarian work cooperatively to plan and implement curriculum based units of study. Units incorporate assessment for learning strategies that inform instruction and motivate students to become active in their own learning.
The CKES Library provides quality resources that support classroom instruction and promote both reading for inquiry and reading for pleasure. These practices empower students to become strategic, independent, lifelong learners.
